Bharananganam Gramapanchayat

The Bharananganam Panchayat came into existence in 1953, alongside the introduction of village panchayats in the Thiru-Kochi State. Initially, the entire Bharananganam revenue village was included within the panchayat. However, in 1960, the eastern section of the Kayyoor ward was merged into the Melukavu Panchayat for the convenience of the public. The first panchayat election was held in 1953; with the exception of the fourth and seventh wards, candidates in all other areas were elected unanimously without a contest.

Bharananganam Grama Panchayat – An IntroductionBharananganam Grama Panchayat is situated in Meenachil Taluk and Lalam Block of Kottayam District, Kerala. The Panchayat was formed in 1953 and has an area of 27.04 square kilometres.The Panchayat is bounded by Melukavu and Thalappalam Grama Panchayats on the east, Kadanad Grama Panchayat on the north, Meenachil and Teekoy Grama Panchayats on the south, and Pala Municipality and Karoor Grama Panchayat on the west. Geographically, Bharananganam falls under the midland region.The tomb of St. Alphonsa is an important pilgrimage centre visited by devotees from all over the world. The tomb and memorials associated with St. Alphonsa, the first Indian woman to be canonized as a saint, along with Bharananganam Church, are widely revered by people across the world. Historical, Cultural and Developmental Background of Bharananganam The Bharananganam region appears to have been inhabited from very early times. The Negrito people are believed to have been the earliest inhabitants, followed later by the Dravidians and, finally, the Aryans. According to legend, the place derived its name from “Paranganam”, referring to the forested area (“Kaanam”) where Bhima, one of the Pandavas, is believed to have performed penance. It is said that the name gradually changed to Bharananganam over time.
