History of Grama Panchayat

Historical, Cultural and Developmental Background of Bharananganam

The Bharananganam region appears to have been inhabited from very early times. The Negrito people are believed to have been the earliest inhabitants, followed later by the Dravidians and, finally, the Aryans. According to legend, the place derived its name from “Paranganam”, referring to the forested area (“Kaanam”) where Bhima, one of the Pandavas, is believed to have performed penance. It is said that the name gradually changed to Bharananganam over time.

Bharananganam has played its own significant role in the various agitations and struggles that took place in Kerala in connection with the social reform movement, the Indian freedom movement, and the movement for responsible government. I.D. Chacko, popularly known as Pappachan of Machiyani, Bharananganam, was one of the persons from the region who actively participated in the national movement.
